Hello and welcome to my blog. Here I'll be chatting about some of the different fibre projects I'm working on or have worked on in the past and want to reminisce about! I love working with fibres of all kinds and methods - knitting, crocheting, felting, stitching, and anything else I'm yet to try.

In this first post I'm going to put up some photos of some of my previous projects for posterity. I'm currently in my second year of a Diploma of Visual Arts at Sunshine Coast TAFE and am thoroughly enjoying it.

This first piece is one I did for TAFE last year. For this piece, we had to do a work based on the Eliza Fraser saga. Eliza Fraser was an Englishwoman who, along with her husband and the crew of his ship, was shipwrecked off the northern end of the Sunshine Coast. She was captured by one of the local Aboriginal tribes until rescued by an escaped convict and taken back to civilisation as she saw it. As I'm not political so didn't want to go down the road of land rights and treatment of Aborigines I decided to concentrate on what Eliza might have been feeling - fear, anger, confusion, desolation and came up with this piece which I call "Maelstrom". It is made from red organza which has been heavily machine stitched. The black circle is strips of black cotton again heavily stitched. The gum leaves are made from fused silk fibres stitched onto wire.

The butterflies in the next 3 pieces were all created by freehand machine embroidery water soluble fabric, stitching wire wing shapes and then dissolving the soluble fabric. I then created little silk bodies and wire antenna and attached them to 3 different backgrounds - another project for TAFE from last year (2008).

OK, that's enough for my first post - I'll be back with more soon. I'd love to know what you think.
